“Philosopher c’est apprendre à mourir”. Source: Gomberville, La Doctrine des mœurs tirée de la philosophie des Stoiques (Paris: Pierre Daret, 1646), part 2 plate 30. The title of this illustration  comes from Montaigne, who quotes Cicero quoting Plato. The hand of Atropos, one of the Fates, holds the old-fashioned one-piece shears which are cutting the thread of life.
